A guide to a sustainable lifestyle

Roadmap to Sustainable Living

The project Roadmap to sustainable Living is an 18-month cooperation project of Erasmus+ in adult education and officially started on September 1, 2025.

The University Association of South Iceland is leading the project in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Advocacy in Slovenia and the Jedi Movement in Serbia. The project focuses on environmental issues, sustainability and inclusion, with the goal of educating people about the ways to lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. At the same time, we want to encourage people of foreign origin to learn about sustainability and what solutions are available to save both our resources and money.

The first product of the project is a roadmap (Roadmap to Sustainable Actions) which is a great measuring tool and guiding document for those who want to do better, or educate others about the benefits of adopting more sustainable practices. In addition, it comes with a collection of exemplary solutions that we encourage everyone to explore. The roadmap is available here in Icelandic, English, Serbian and Slovenian.

The first steps!

The guide is a guiding document and is by no means intended to be perfect.

There is a lot of material in the guide, and we recommend that you first skim the pages and stop where you are interested. There is no need to read every letter. Try the following:

  • Start by looking at the pictures, boxes, and what is in bold.
  • Look at the numbers and try to figure out where you stand.
  • Take a look at the projects and what paths can be taken.
  • Choose a task that you think is easiest for you to complete. You can always add more difficulty.
  • Customize each theme to your ability and enjoy the process.

How do I do that?

Anyone interested in adopting a more sustainable lifestyle, regardless of ability and knowledge. Everyone can contribute without changing much in their daily habits. The guide is suitable for individuals, households, educational institutions, municipalities, institutions and private parties. Everyone who works with the material shapes it and adapts it to the circumstances and target groups they are working with at any given time.

All materials related to the guide are free. We recommend saving it to your computer for easier access. You can of course print it out as needed, but we recommend trying to do as little of it as possible for the sake of the environment.

Everyone who begins their journey does so without obligation and only gives as much time as they can in their schedule. We strongly emphasize that every step towards the better is progress. It is not a question of perfection, but simply of doing a little better than before.

We would like to reiterate that all the content in this guide is “live” and may change with new information, research or knowledge. We try to keep it up to date to the best of our ability, but if you have any ideas or suggestions that might be helpful, we would love to hear from you. The best way to do this is by sending an email to helga@hfsu.is or hfsu@hfsu.is.
