On the occasion of the annual meeting of the Association of Knowledge Centers of the UN, the association hosted a seminar in Selfoss on the 29th. of last August
The projects and roles that the centers play in their regions and their importance in society were discussed, together with the fact that the centers that make up the organization have loose contracts with the Ministry of University, Industry and Innovation / HVIN and have been so since 2018, with the associated uncertainty in operation.
The representative of the ministry, Minister Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir, as well as the owners of the centers and their relatives, were also invited to the session. The seminar included speeches from Ingunna Jónsdóttur, chairperson of SÞS and executive director of the University Association of Southland, Þorvar Árnasyn, director of the Research Institute Hí á Hornafjörður, and Tryggva Hjaltasyn, chairman of the Vestmannaeyja Knowledge Center, as well as a speech from Minister Áslaug Örna.
In the continuation of the speeches, a panel discussion was set up, which included, in addition to the minister, Sæunn Stefánsdóttir, director of the Institute of Research Centers of the University of Helsinki and a board member of the University Association, Austurbrú and the Vestmannaeyja Knowledge Center; Hafdís Hrönn Hafsteinsdóttir Member of Parliament for the Southern Constituency and Teitur Björn Einarsson Member of Parliament for the North-West Constituency.
The presentations were well received, as well as good and relevant panel discussions. The members of the Association of Knowledge Centers brought with them good support and understanding of the importance of the work done on their behalf, and thank all the participants for coming and contributing.
