A presentation about the project was held on Thursday, April 3rd in Fjölheimar.
The Árborg Library, the Education Network and the University of South Iceland have joined forces and have begun implementing the project Give Icelandic a Chance. The project was originally launched at the University Centre of the Westfjords, where it has achieved great success, and is now moving to us in Árborg.
The project is primarily about opening up the world of Icelandic to residents of foreign origin and giving them the opportunity to communicate in Icelandic regardless of ability and without prejudice. Anyone who wants to speak Icelandic needs to be given the opportunity to express themselves at the level of ability that the individual possesses, and we who speak the language need to give them the opportunity and then create a situation where the person in question feels more secure.
Companies in the area have been invited to participate in the project, but it will depend on the extent to which the participating parties implement the project within their organizations. The management is now looking at how the project can accommodate employees of foreign origin as well as service recipients who collect goods and services, and we hope to be able to formally announce which companies in Árborg will participate soon after Easter.
Two events will be held in connection with the project.
On Thursday, May 8th, there will be a phrase fair at Árborg Library in Selfoss. where we will introduce traditional Icelandic phrases like “jæja, tæs særtst” (Well, this will work out) and other fun things to residents of foreign origin.
On Thursday, June 2nd, we are going on a date with the Icelandic where we practice speaking and listening while getting to know different cultures.
We will advertise and let you know as soon as everything is ready, so stay tuned. Those who want to learn more about the project and get to know the beginnings even more can check out Gefum íslensku séns .
The project is funded by the South Iceland Development Fund.
